For centuries, pigs were considered the masters of foraging truffles. But certain breeds of dogs have equally skilled sniffers, and are less likely to eat what they find. Truffle hunters in Umbria rely on an ancient breed of water retrievers. The current star of a team that sources Seasons 52 truffles is Frieda, a mellow but extremely focused 5 year-old, who works alongside two pointers named Rocco and Ringo. When they’re not working, they’re begging for belly rubs.
